Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a critical procedure that is designed to protect us from hazardous energy sources that could cause serious injury or even death if not properly controlled. By following LOTO procedures diligently, we ensure that equipment and machinery are safely isolated from their energy sources before maintenance or service work begins. 

Why LOTO is Important 

• Prevent Accidents: Ensures machinery cannot be accidentally energized while being serviced. 

• Protect Workers: Minimizes the risk of injuries from unexpected machine start-ups, moving parts, or stored energy releases. 

LOTO Procedures 

1. Preparation: Identify all energy sources and types involved. 

2. Notification: Notify affected employees about the planned shutdown. 

3. Shutdown: Turn off equipment using proper shutdown procedures. 

4. Isolation: Isolate equipment from its energy source(s). 

5. Lockout: Securely lock energy isolating devices with assigned locks. 

6. Tagout: Attach appropriate tags indicating equipment status and who is responsible.
