Distracted Driving
What is Distracted Driving?
Distracted driving is when someone is driving a motor vehicle while engaged in another activity.
Examples of Distracted Driving:
There are many examples of distracted driving, anything that takes ones focus away from the road is considered distracted driving.
- Texting
- Eating
- Drinking
- Smoking
- Passenger interference
- Talking on the phone
- Adjusting controls
- Grooming (hair, makeup.)
- Tending to a child
- Drugs/Alcohol
Risks of Distracted Driving:
Distracted driving could result in serious injuries of both you and others, along with lifelong injuries or even death of both you and others around you. They can result in fines, lose of license or jail time. It can also cause serious damage to vehicles.
How to Prevent Distracted Driving:
1. Get comfortable before you go, fix mirrors, radios seats etc. before you leave.
2. Put your phone away, either in a bag, pocket or in a closed space. Allow anyone who may need to know where you
are going before you leave.
3. Eat before you drive, either at home, or stop at a restaurant for a quick stop to eat.
4. If you drop something leave it, or if it is important pull over when safe to do so.
5. Get ready before you leave.
6. Plan your route before you leave either with a GPS yourself or have you passenger guide you.
7. If you are feeling tired, do not fight it pull over and rest.
Nothing is more important than you arriving to your destination safely. If someone calls pull over or wait and explain you were driving no one will be angry, if your hungry grab a burger at a fast-food joint and eat there to stretch your legs. There is always an alternative to distracted driving, remember there is no excuse.
